This one was a straightforward swap, but the details matter. The old GE unit had clearly run its course - worn connections, aging components, and the kind of wear that tells you it's only a matter of time before something goes wrong. We pulled it out and got a new Rheem performance unit set in its place.

The bigger addition here was the expansion tank. A lot of homeowners don't know this, but if your home has a closed plumbing system - which most modern homes do - water has nowhere to go when it heats up and expands. That pressure has to go somewhere. Without an expansion tank, it cycles back into the water heater itself, putting stress on the tank, the valves, and the rest of the system over time.

The blue Amtrol expansion tank you see mounted up top handles exactly that. It gives the system a buffer so pressure doesn't build up where it shouldn't. It's a relatively simple add-on that can meaningfully extend the life of your water heater and help you avoid premature failures down the road.

Most water heaters give you signs before they fully quit - lukewarm water, small leaks around the base, rust-colored water, or a unit that's pushing past the 10-year mark. Waiting until it fails completely usually means water damage and a rushed replacement on a bad timeline. Getting ahead of it is almost always the better call.

We handle water heater replacements like this regularly throughout the Ballston Spa area. Whether it's a standard swap or a full system upgrade with added protection like an expansion tank, we make sure the work is done right and the system is set up to last.
